Great video lesson! What heads are you using on your toms, they sound good

Whew, right foot with 3 successive 8th notes in a row at 5:10 mark is soooooooo well done. My foot looked up at me like "you want me to do that?"

Can you explain how you tuned the drums to achieve these sounds? I swear there was hand percussion on a separate track here… Super cool!

Those are nice when you hit the crash it sounds like I'm standing next to the cymbal wow. What cymbals do you use? They sound great. Great playing as well!

what size drum?

That’s hard as sh*t! The speed is my primary challenge, but I am using brushes. Perhaps that’s not helping my cause. What size sticks do you recommend for this style? I typically use VF AJ2, which I suspect is somewhat big for this style… in any case, I dig the lesson and look forward to checking out the others.

I just found this video, but yesterday I had told my wife that this was the favorite of my collection. It is the most scared up, the least pretty and the only one I have not changed anything on except the heads.

Is that a 24” or 26” kick? Floor Tom,Rack Tom sizes?? The kit looks as good as it sounds!!! I’m guessing Supraphonic snare, a classic sound for sure.

Like it mike. That hihat timekeeper has always been a challenge for me since I am a long time double bass guy and left instrument is a bass drum. This is going to be fun.

I'm such a huge fan and advocate of these mij snares. I've got about a half dozen or so and as long as you can get the throwoff to behave, you're good. They sound great. Way better than you'd ever expect from a drum that you can get for under $50, and as stated in the video, they come in some pretty funky finishes. Thanks for bringing attention to these awesome snares!!

I have a rounded blue & olive badge, which I believe is an 80’s model; it’s not the orange peel texture, but it’s definitely painted. I have my eye on a pointy blue and olive badge that I believe is a 70’s model, but I’ve never seen one in person; are those typically painted as well, or were they the brushed aluminum? I was under the impression that the “raw” aluminum models were almost strictly made in the 60’s with keystone badges. Is there a finish somewhere in their history I’m missing?

Thank Mike, that was very helpful. I noticed that you used a Tune Bot Gig in this video. Have you ever had an issue with it confusing the fundamental pitch with the batter head pitch? Have you ever used a Tune Bot Studio? How helpful is its filter mode?

The ribbon really added some nice low end. Alone it sounded a little too boxy, but mixed with the other mic it sounds great!

The Earthtone sounds really good on that snare. I’ve used goat and kangaroo, but I prefer the goatskin on my black beauty. May have to try Earthtone someday.

Sounds great! I wonder if the sound difference would be even more noticeable when using calfskin heads on the toms. Also, how do you think the real thing compares to Evan’s’ Calftones or Remo Fiberskyn?

I hate that I put myself in this position but about 8 years ago I sold my 70’s 3 piece classic maple and 5x14 Supra for $600 just because I wasn’t really playing them anymore… the setup was a gift for my 14th birthday from my recently deceased father and the past couple years I regret selling it… constantly… wish I would’ve at least kept the snare.

Right on the beat, groove and as always the best sounding drums true to the original sound.

Love the JB stuff you've been doing. It's not that hard to do a half-assed facsimile of most of these, but to do what you're doing (actually nailing it) is much harder - takes a lot of study and shedding, followed by serious focus when actually playing it. (Most guys vary the groove here and there, plus put in unnecessary fills, etc.) Good on you, Mike - strong work!
